In Nepal, cricket is the most popular sport. Many people play it around the country, especially in the Terai region. The national cricket team's greatest achievement was reaching the qualification competition for the 2014 ICC World T20, which was hosted in Bangladesh. Nepal's playing season lasts from September to November, then resumes in March and ends in May. The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) formally established the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in January 2013 to guide young players and give continuous training facilities to the men's national team, women's national team, and under-19 squad.

Cricket Association of Nepal - CAN is the country's official governing organization for cricket. It was established in 1946.

There are 65 cricket grounds in Nepal, with 17 turf wickets, however only the Tribhuvan University International Cricket Ground can host international matches. The Pokhara Cricket Ground, which held the women's event at the 2019 South Asian Games, is the only other venue that has hosted international cricket.

In February 2020, Nepal hosted the United States and Oman in the fifth round of the 2019–2023 ICC Cricket World Cup League 2. In the series' last encounter, Nepal bowled out the United States for the joint-lowest ODI total of 35.  On February 8, 2020, Kushal Malla (Nepal) made his ODI debut, becoming the youngest male cricketer to make an international half-century at the age of 15 years and 340 days while playing against the USA.

In April 2021, Nepal hosted the Netherlands and Malaysia in the Nepal Tri-Nation Series 2020–21. Nepal came up on top of the points table, winning three of their four group matches and qualifying for the final, where they faced the Netherlands. Nepal won the series with a 142-run victory over the Netherlands.  Kushal Bhurtel, who was making his Nepal debut, was named Player of the Series after scoring 278 runs in the series at an average of 69.50 and a strike rate of 140.
